Why do you want to be in this program and why are you excited to be a part of if?
I want to help develop pre-service teachers and increase in my leadership ability. I think that mentoring is a key component and is very exciting to me. I am also excited to foster relationships with those across my country and the metropolitan area to improve science education as a whole.
What qualities does a teacher leader possess that you would like to develop within yourself by the end of the program?
I want to work on my ability to continue to lead by example while empowering others. Sometimes I think in my desire to help people multiply their talent, I actually diminish or unintentionally demean them by how I speak or by not delegating because I think I can do it best. So I think I need to work on holding my tongue, delegation, and continuing to reflect.
What is a current issue in K-12 science education that you are interested in helping to solve?
I would like to look at retention of novice teachers, especially males, in the field. I would also like to look at how science and math could cross-curricularly align concepts perhaps to increase topic retention; as I’ve seen in lower performing classes there seems to be a great deficit in math. Perhaps CCS will help, but will more collaboration and discussion of students?
