Why do you want to be in this program and why are you excited to be a part of it?
I am excited to be in this program because of the many possibilities it gives me to grow both as a teacher and as a teacher leader. I want to be in this program because it provides me with unique opportunities to sit down with other chemistry and physics teachers who have similar beliefs and pedagogical views to collaborate, learn, discuss, and expand the learning of chemistry and physics and how it is taught. I also appreciate the mentoring component of the program that allows for me to be continually challenged to seek new and higher goals.
What qualities does a teacher leader possess that you would like to develop within yourself by the end of the program?
I already feel myself transforming as a teacher leader. Now that I am in year two of the program I have begun developing myself in many aspects of teacher leadership including teacher as scholar, teacher as reflective practitioner, and teacher as a learning partner. I have been able to begin to analyze and research teacher retention and have been able to provide teacher professional development. These experiences have made me acutely more aware of my own practice within my classroom and the literature available. Teacher leadership also has given me unique opportunities to provide professional development within my school and to provide professional development to other science teachers within my district. I hope to continue to grow as a teacher leader throughout the duration of this project and beyond.
What is a current issue in K-12 science education that you are interested in helping to solve?
I believe the problem of quality teacher development and induction support during the initial years is an important issue and I am happy to be looking into this in more detail as this project continues. I also am interested in teacher development and influencing teachers to develop and expand their teaching practice to include more inquiry activities into their curriculum as well as higher order thinking questions. I am also interested in the development of more professional research and articles related to the NGSS and the new AP Curriculum.
